Mildred Gantt Obituary

Mildred Christine Gantt, aged 104, was born October 20, 1919 in Gantt, Alabama and was the fraternal twin of Victor Gantt.  She was the daughter of the late John Thomas Gantt and Julia Crittendon Gantt.  Born in Gantt, Alabama, Mildred attended the Gantt Public Schools and in 1937 married Thomas Jones.  She is preceded in death by 21 of her 22 brothers and sisters, her former husband Thomas Jones, her sons John Henry Jones, Sr. and George Jackson.

In her earlier days, she served in the civilian corps in Florida and later relocated to New York state for nearly 30 years, lived in North Carolina for a brief period and finally returned home to Alabama for the past 24 years.  She was fondly called “Tea” (short for Christine) or “Ms. Gantt”.  Mildred was a quiet and strong person, who was friendly and loved family.  She loved a clean house and could be found cleaning the house or working in the yard with her hoe.  Mildred was especially known for her witty remarks (especially about the government) and in her later years, she would always say that she was thankful to God for another day!  Her advice whenever she spoke with you was to love God and to love one another.

Mildred Christine Gantt leaves to cherish her memories her sister, Jeannette McCants of Palm City, Florida, 8 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren, and 44 great-great-grandchildren; a special grand-nephew:  Michael McCants, Jr. and a host of great nieces, great nephews and other loving family members.
